Yuck. Gross. I should stick to those resolutions once I set them, people. Namely, my avoidance of fish and seafood in general. One, it's filled with toxins, and two, most commercial fishing is very bad for the environment.
But no, I wanted to make salmon filled ice balls for the family. What a mistake. My DH picked up some canned salmon at the store, and when he opened it up ... it was a mishmash of skin, meat and bones. Literally, as if someone had just shoved a whole salmon into the can. Pulling the mixture out, I found what looked like a whole vertebrae column. :(
I thought there had surely been some mistake. I thought about complaining to the company. I wanted to make sure I wasn't in the wrong first though, and not surprisingly, I was.
According to another About.com cooking site, Busy Cooks, this is absolutely normal and expected. In fact, she recommends using the bones in your recipes. Says they're a great source of calcium. Me, in the meantime, I think may faint.
